About Us

Fresh Local Tortillas

Our Story:

Hi there! We’re Jorge Sosa and Michael Docter, co-owners of Mi Tierra Tortillas. We pride ourselves in bringing the highest quality tortilla to you at an affordable price. Here’s our story:

All the way back in 2013, Michael was an organic farmer and an avid fan of the food served at Mi Tierra Restaurant in Hadley. At the same time; Jorge and Dora cooked delicious authentic Mexican food in a family setting. Michael brought his family there regularly, (mostly after soccer practices when healthy food is much appreciated!). During meal time at the restaurant Jorge and Michael began to talk about the lack of good tortillas in New England. Wouldn’t it be great if we could make them from fresh local corn. This was where the idea of Mi Tierra Tortillas began.

In 2014 a fire ravaged the building that housed Mi Tierra restaurant, burning the entire building to the ground, including their newly purchased tortilla making machine. Jorge and Dora needed to build back everything they had lost. They searched for a new home for the restaurant while making tortillas for sale by hand. Michael sold the tortillas at his farmer’s markets that winter and Jorge and Michael began to plan the business of Mi Tierra Tortillas.

Nixtamalization:

Mi Tierra Tortillas use the ancient methods of Nixtamalization to process our tortillas before they are baked off & packaged. It’s an old & simple way to extract the naturally occurring nutrients out of the corn. This way you get the maximum nourishment from the food that comes out of your ground. We use locally grown organic & conventional corn, to bring you the freshest, best tasting tortillas available to the east coast. To learn more about this process, be sure to check out our blog post or F.A.Q. pages.

Throughout Northeast

Mi Tierra tortillas are famous all throughout New England and for good reason. Jorge & Michael started making tortillas together in 2014. This was after a fire ravaged Jorges Mexican restaurant Mi Tierra and they needed a way to build back everything they had lost. Using ancient methods of Nixtamalization and locally grown 100% organically certified corn, the dynamic duo worked out a way to bring the freshest & best tortillas available to the east coast. Corn tortillas specifically are a big part of traditional Mexican/American culture. Being able to recreate the authentic approach in New England is a dream come true for the whole family. Due to this, we at Mi Tierra tortillas pride ourselves in bringing the highest quality product at an affordable price for as many people as possible.

Our Tortillas

We take pride in our tortillas because we know that the best quality ingredients and practices get put in place to bring them to life. One of the main things that sets us apart from the competition is our dedication to local. Co-founder Michael Doctor is a proficient & well know farmer himself who enjoys simple living and all things sustainable. Locally sourced ingredients means less transportation emissions and a lighter carbon footprint. The closer you live to where your food comes from the better it’s going to be for your body & the planet!

Details are important, especially when it comes to what goes in your body. Our organic tortillas are made from local organic corn. The only ingredients we add are water and a trace of crushed limestone to Nixtamalize the corn, learn more about Nixtamalization in our blog post. Because there’s no preservatives in our tortillas the shelf life is only 10 days (they will last several weeks if frozen). Any time you’re eating tortillas more than a week and a half old you can bet they are using some type of preservatives to maintain the strength. It’s our mission to make sure only the highest quality ingredients & product end up on your plate.

If you have a suggestion for where we should deliver or a type of product you think we should offer let us know!

Our Pledge

Mi Tierra Tortillas are made from 100% non-GMO corn. Our neighbors grow the corn here in the Connecticut River Valley. If they run out, we sometimes buy from our friends in nearby New York. Corn, Water, and Lime. Those are the only ingredients we use and the only ingredients we need!

Our Family

Mi Tierra started as a dream of Jorge and Dora’s to bring authentic Mexican food to Western Massachusetts.  We are continuing that dream by making tortillas in the ancient “nixtamalazation” process. Because of that, our tortillas contain no chemicals, no additives, no nasty stuff, just 100% corn the way our forefathers intended. To learn more about our story & dedication to gluten free tortillas check out our about page.

Our History

Mi Tierra the restaurant is located in the heart of Hadley and has a rich fascinating history of it’s own. As a result, the tortillas you know and love wouldn’t be the same as they are today. They are here today because of the transition from idea to grocery store to restaurant to Tortilleria! Learn about the history and story of Jorge, Dora, & Michael on their website. If you have any pictures, stories, or memories you’d like to share about your experience with Mi Tierra Foods be sure to reach out to us through out contact page or message us on any of our social media channels. We’d love to hear from you all.
